The National Gallery
A Place to Work

We are delighted you are considering applying for a job at the National Gallery. We hope the information in this section will encourage you to apply.

The National Gallery houses the nation's collection of Western European painting from the 13th century to 1900. Almost all of the collection is on display, 360 days a year, free of charge to the 5 million or so visitors who visit the Gallery each year from all over the world. The Gallery also provides a wide variety of associated services and events including exhibitions, lectures, guided tours, information and services for schools.

The Gallery's aim is to care for, enhance and study its collection, so as to be able to encourage access to the pictures for the education and enjoyment of the widest possible public now and in the future. It aims for the highest international standards in all its activities.

At the moment the Gallery has about 500 employees ranging from security staff, curators and art handlers to conservators and finance staff, and from fund raisers and front of house staff to education, exhibition and design experts.

Our visitors come from many different backgrounds and we think the Gallery can only benefit from having staff who are equally diverse. We work hard to recognise, support and develop our staff and believe that everyone who works here should be treated with the same level of respect regardless of their background. We are genuinely committed to equality of opportunity and encourage applications from all sections of the community.

All staff are based in central London. Depending on the work they do, some are located in the Gallery itself on the north side of Trafalgar Square; others are in refurbished open-plan offices behind the Gallery's Sainsbury Wing.
