Basaiti was probably of Greek origin, but he was born in Venice or in Friuli. There are many signed works, some of them dated; the signatures vary in spelling, but are most often Baxaiti.
His artistic beginnings are obscure; towards 1500-10 he sometimes approached rather closely the style of Giovanni Bellini.
