Carriera was born in Venice, and was an internationally celebrated portrait
pastellist, often portraying foreign visitors. In 1705 she was elected a member of the Accademia di San Luca, Rome. In 1720-1 she was in Paris, where her work was received with great admiration. Her more sentimental pictures, especially of young girls, seem to anticipate
Greuze.
