Ed Kienholz was one of the most original, influential and provocative artists of the 20th century and a pioneer of what was to become known as installation art. The Hoerengracht, literally ‘Whore’s Canal’, was made in collaboration with his wife, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, with whom Ed started working in 1972. It is one of the largest and most powerful pieces the couple created.

Viewers become voyeurs as they enter a seedy evocation of Amsterdam’s notorious red-light district.  We reflect upon the lives of the women who ply their trade there, and on their ancestral equivalents – the ‘scarlet women’ who adorn the walls of the National Gallery.  Installation art is our focus as are the artists who make it – Ed and Nancy Kienholz, and their contemporaries, as well as artists of today.
