A one-day course at the National Gallery for Primary School Teachers focusing on creative cross-curricular planning using a painting as a central stimulus

Course content

The National Gallery has an unrivalled collection of Western European paintings dating from about 1250, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Monet. These pictures belong to the nation and admission to see them is free. This course will demonstrate ways of using paintings by these and other artists as a focus for enriching learning across the curriculum for every child.

During the day, teachers will be introduced to the National Gallery’s highly successful nationwide Take One Picture scheme, which aims to encourage primary schools to integrate art into many areas of the curriculum by using one painting as a context for making meaningful links between different subjects.

Evidence from hundreds of schools already participating in the scheme suggests that this creative, holistic approach can improve pupils’ learning and performance, enhance children’s ability to work together in groups and help build stronger community relationships beyond the classroom.
