Portrait of a Man

Perhaps made in preparation for a more finished version of the same size (which is in a private collection). The man has been identified unjustifiably with Odet de Coligny (1515 - 1571), who became a cardinal. The sitter may be an ecclesiastic or a French courtier.

The small and intimate character of this work shows the influence of portraits from the artist's native Netherlands in the 16th-century.
