1616-18, Domenichino and assistants

Explore the paintings

This series of fresco paintings decorated the Stanza di Apollo in the garden pavilion of the Villa Aldobrandini at Frascati.

Each depicts an episode from the story of Apollo and the subjects are, with one exception, taken from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses'. Of the ten original scenes, seven and a fragment of one more are at the National Gallery, while the others remain in situ.

Domenichino and a team of assistants carried out the work between 1616 and 1618.
