Cherries are offered to the infant Christ in a golden chalice, which is a reminder of Francia's own work as a goldsmith - almost all of which has been lost.
The painting was acquired by Ludwig Mond as the work of Francia in 1893 and retained this attribution until 1995. Another version of the composition then appeared on the art market and it was doubted that Francia could have painted two versions of the same composition. Technical evidence seemed to support doubts about the National Gallery's version, which was suspected of being a forgery. However, further investigations in 1998 established that the painting is by Francia.
