On the Coast, Isle of Wight
Lord Frederic Leighton

This oil sketch shows a stretch of the Isle of Wight coastline from Ventnor looking west towards Woody Head in the Saint Lawrence region. The red-roofed turret peaking through the trees at the right belongs to the Chalet Hotel, built in the mid-19th century and still standing. The identification of the coastline was made by Mark Collins, a resident of the Isle of Wight. His recognition of the site suggests that this painting can be identified with the previously untraced oil sketch entitled 'On the Coast, Isle of Wight', that was sold with the contents of Leighton's studio in 1896 after his death.
