As well as a cockerel, hens and chicks, there is a pigeon and a finch (above left).
D'Hondecoeter specialised in large-scale decorative canvases of birds. It can be compared to a similar picture (Karlsruhe, Kunsthalle) which is signed and dated 1668, and was probably painted at about the same time. The chick in the left foreground appears in both pictures.
