Poussin created this celebrated set of paintings for an Italian patron, Cassiano dal Pozzo. The paintings would have been displayed together.
There were seven paintings in the set. 'Baptism' is now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and 'Penance' was destroyed by fire early in the 19th century.
