Sérusier was the founder of the Nabis (Hebrew for 'prophets'), a group of painters who adopted Gauguin's expressive use of colour and pattern. The influence of Gaugin's style on the work of Sérusier is exemplified in the primitive qualities of the young girl and the large areas of flat colour that make up the landscape.
