A Rocky Landscape

This early study from nature was perhaps painted in the Forest of Fontainebleau in France, possibly at Les Sables de Jaen-du-Paris, a rocky and sandy site within the forest. A gully runs down the middle of the rocky ravine.

Scumbled cream paint gives the impression of sand. The unusual high horizon and steep terrain are typical of Rousseau's work.
