Why we need your support
The National Gallery exists to connect people with great art. For almost two hundred years we have cared for our collection in trust for the nation and encouraged the widest possible access for everyone's education and enjoyment.
In order to continue to care for and display the nation’s pictures, share knowledge and expertise with organisations nationwide and across the world, and foster a deeper understanding and enjoyment of art, we need your support. Each year we must self-generate half of our income and the support of individuals, trusts, foundations and companies play a vital role in achieving this.

1. Caring for and enhancing the collection
Our Conservation, Curatorial, Scientific and Framing Departments look after the nation’s pictures and preserve them for the future. Enhancing the collection through restoration and reframing enables audiences to best appreciate the wonders of our pictures.
Building the collection through acquisitions means we can preserve works of historical and cultural importance for audiences to enjoy forever. Your gift could help care for the nation’s pictures and protect them for future generations.
2. Sharing the collection
The National Gallery is free and open to all. Over six million visitors come through our doors each year to come face-to-face with our masterpieces. Our exhibitions offer new perspectives and opportunities to explore art and artists in greater depth, while our digital content and national programmes take our collection out to the nation, into people’s homes and local communities.
Donations help keep entry to the National Gallery free and enable us to ensure the widest possible access.
3. Learning
Our learning programmes offer opportunities for all ages, abilities and needs. Many of our learning activities are free and our outreach projects enable us to engage audiences who are less able to visit the Gallery.
A gift towards our learning programmes will ensure everyone can continue to learn from and enjoy the national collection.
4. Sharing our knowledge and expertise
We are a national resource and sharing our expertise, skills and knowledge, with audiences, peers and other arts organisations is a cornerstone of our work. Whether it’s through our scientific publication the Technical Bulletin, our scholarly catalogues, or 10-minute talks we are committed to sharing our work and research.

5. Providing state-of-the-art facilities for the best possible access
We aim to make access to the paintings enjoyable and welcoming to the widest possible public. We work continually to improve access and to provide a world-class welcome to all visitors. Our Buildings Team makes our spaces safe and suitable environments for both visitors and paintings.
