Early Summer (Bakashû)
Yasujiro Ozu, 1951
B&W, cert U, 125 mins
Saturday 1 November, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre
Ozu’s elegant and engrossing family drama is poised between the idyllic pre-war years and the modern world. The director sympathetically explores the way in which major shifts in society, as well as the simple passing of time, can put strain on family ties – particularly when life-changing decisions need to be made, such as choosing a husband.
What makes the film so delightful is the suggestion of nature’s ability to put problems into perspective and the characters’ essentially good-humoured acceptance of the rhythm of change. As Jim Jarmusch put it: ‘Nothing is forced’.
