Elena et les hommes (Elena and Her Men)

Jean Renoir, 1956
colour, cert PG, 95 mins

Saturday 25 October, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre

Set in turn-of-the-century France, Jean Renoir’s enchanting romance stars Ingrid Bergman in her most sensual role as the beautiful but impoverished Polish princess Elena Sorokowska.

The widowed Elena has a history of catapulting men to great success. Having just accepted a marriage proposal from a wealthy older industrialist, she falls in love with her next project: the heroic General Rollan (Jean Marais).

Will she marry for love, or merely to restore her wealth? Exploring one of Renoir's great themes – life as staged spectacle – the political and romantic intrigues reach an affecting conclusion.
