Gertrud
Carl Dreyer, 1964
B&W, cert PG, 116 mins
Saturday 29 November, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre
This was the last film Dreyer made. It stands as a memorial to the director’s lifelong preoccupation with the complex role and status of women. In chronicling Gertrud’s uncompromising search for love, he does not simply document but presents us with the psychological reality of this proud and courageous woman.
Having given up a career as a soprano singer, Gertrud (Nina Pens Rode) finds herself languishing in a comfortable marriage and in a passionate affair with a young poet. When an old lover returns, she leaves her husband, and is more determined than ever to find the ideal love.
