Rebecca

Alfred Hitchcock, 1940
B&W, cert PG, 126 mins

Saturday 22 November, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre

In this masterly adaptation, Hitchcock transfers to screen Daphne du Maurier’s captivating mix of swooning romance and gothic menace. He captures the convincing and surprising way in which the central characters evolve.

While on holiday, enigmatic widower Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier) is attracted to a timid, unsophisticated young woman (Joan Fontaine) who seems to understand his pain. They marry and he takes her back to his Cornish estate of Manderley, where she must face the lingering memories of his late wife Rebecca and her formidable housekeeper, Mrs Danvers.
