With the invention of the collapsible paint tube in 1841, interest in how pictures are painted began to wane.

Before then artists were in close contact with painting materials. An understanding of the processes can enhance our appreciation of the Old Masters.

We will discuss and demonstrate the three major techniques of Western painting: fresco, egg tempera and gilding, and oil.
