Dutch interiors of the 17th century charm with their realistic depiction of home life, but research into the symbolism employed by Dutch artists has revealed that many domestic scenes actually represent brothels.

James Heard (National Gallery Education) explores the contradiction in Calvinist society whereby the taste for depictions of Protestant churches developed into a fondness for pictures of loose women.
