In response to The Sacred Made Real, lecturer Steven Barrett will look at the development of the Baroque style: how innovative Italian art of about 1600 travelled to Spain and inspired artists there to create some of the most compelling religious images and portraits of the 17th century.

Key National Gallery paintings by Velázquez, Zurbarán and Murillo will be discussed in the context of the religious practices and political struggles of the period.
