Decarbonisation

The National Gallery has a strong history of decarbonisation through the work of our buildings and facilities team. In 2011, our first Carbon Management Plan was published. This plan targeted a 43% reduction in our scope 1 and 2 emissions from a 2005 baseline by 2020 and managed to achieve this target in 2013/14. This reduction level sat at 46% in the reporting period of 2022-23.

Our next Carbon Management Plan will take us to 2050. This edition of the Carbon Management Plan summarises the data and progress we have made towards these targets and details next steps in our commitment to carbon reduction, mitigating climate change and working towards net zero.

We are working toward further understanding of our Scope 3 emissions and following an external sustainability review in partnership with Julie’s Bicycle in 2022, we undertook a full carbon footprint measurement and have a baseline year measurement of 14,744 tCO2e for 2019/20.

We are currently working with in-depth carbon accounting to develop specific targets and actions, to map out our journey to net zero.
