Members' talk and Q&A
About
Food is rife with metaphor. Art historian and artist Aliki Braine looks at these metaphors at this online Members’ talk and Q&A.
In Christian religious art, we see depictions of bread, water, wine and citrus fruits – each rich with meaning. We see this in still life and scenes by Luis Meléndez, Gerolamo dai Libri and Zurbarán. In paintings by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and Nicolas Poussin, food is an essential ingredient in the unfolding scenes of the Eucharist. And it is one layer of many in Joachim Beuckelaer’s series, ‘The Four Elements’.
Whether it's a single glistening fruit carefully painted to reflect light or a riotous tumble of vibrant meats and fish, turn your gaze to food with Aliki Braine.
