Exploring Matisse and Picasso's Paris
About
Join us for a tour exploring Matisse and Picasso's formative years in Paris, focusing on how their personal journeys shaped their search for a distinct artistic style and why Paris became a vibrant hub for artists in the early 1900s. Using memoirs and letters, we will trace Picasso’s evolution from the Blue and Rose periods, while Matisse’s path will unfold through Fauvism.
The tour will also apply a psychological lens to understand what was happening in their lives both internally—in terms of their thoughts and emotions—and externally.
Finally, the tour concludes with an analysis of Matisse's 'Le Bonheur de Vivre' (1906) and Picasso's 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' (1907), exploring how these ground-breaking works not only defined the distinct styles of Matisse and Picasso, but also signalled a transformative moment in modern art.
