About
Artist and host of the Pattern Portraits podcast Lauren Godfrey leads a tour of patterns in the National Gallery Collection.
From sumptuous silks to intricate lace, artists have long drawn upon textiles and clothing to add depth, complexity and charm to their paintings. Together with Lauren, the tour looks at some of the key patterns and textiles in the collection, exploring their history and significance in a contemporary context.
Bring along a sketch book and pen if you’d like to draw from the patterns as we explore the galleries.
This is a guided walking tour through the collection for which headsets will be provided. Please meet at the Information Desk in the Sainsbury Wing Foyer.
Your host
Lauren Godfrey is an artist based in London. Her work invites interaction and collaboration, often swerving close to furniture or the quasi-useful. In recent work, fountains and sundials – elemental clichés – meet post-modern silhouettes and pattern overload. There’s a suggested functionality and a whisper of a potential state shift, collaborating with surrounding elements and viewers alike. The work offers space to the viewer whether it be to take a meditative moment in the company of trickling water or an invitation to interact and respond.
