About
Take a walk in John Constable’s footsteps, where the Romantic landscape painter made ‘The Hay Wain’, which now features in ‘Discover Constable and the Hay Wain’.
Art historian and critic Estelle Lovatt guides you through this 18th-century masterpiece and its making. 'The Hay Wain' depicts Willy Lott’s house and the River Stour in Flatford, Suffolk, but much of it was painted in Constable’s back garden shed in Hampstead, London.
Constable fell in love with Hampstead while studying at the Royal Academy. Mostly countryside at the time, its fields of cattle, horses and sheep reminded him of his Suffolk childhood. He moved to North London to raise his family. Here, he captured the clouds in the sky, the wind through the trees, and fleeting moments which went on to influence Impressionism and Expressionism.
Learn more about Constable, his life and the landscapes he captured in his paintings.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of this talk.
