About

Join artist and founder of art empowerment charity Arts-Alive, Lanre Olagoke MBE for a creative workshop celebrating identity, empowerment and resilience inspired by Degas’ representation of Miss La La.

Lanre will be accompanied by Gallery Educator, Joanna Conybeare, who will begin the session by introducing  ‘Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando’. Lanre’s workshop will then focus on exploring self-expression and the affirmation of one’s own identity through a range of black and white mediums. Drawing on his own career as an artist and inspiring life journey, ‘Who I Am’ gets to the very core of who we are as individuals, and provides a creative space to explore our multifaceted and complex identities. Lanre’s passion and inspiration for this workshop derives from his shared affinity with Miss La La, both as prominent Black artists of their time and having three daughters each.

Lanre Olagoke

Lanre Olagoke MBE was born in London and grew up in Nigeria. He is a self-taught painter whose work has been exhibited worldwide in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Barcelona, France, Africa, and the UK. His art, ever-changing and uniquely vibrant, tells the story of his journey from homelessness to hope. Lanre founded the Art-Alive Arts Trust, a registered UK-based charity, in 1997. Over the years, AAAT has helped over 5,000 young people find opportunities to realise their potential through the use of art. In 2024 he was awarded an MBE for his work helping young people access the arts.

Joanna Conybeare

Joanna Conybeare is an artist and Gallery Educator who has worked in Primary and Secondary schools in London and the south coast as a teacher and subject lead for Art and Design.
