About

This is a Members’ exclusive introduction to ‘Discover Constable and the Hay Wain’.

‘The Hay Wain’ is now considered a traditional picture of the English countryside. But when it was first unveiled, the artist’s approach to depicting the British landscape was seen by some as quite radical.

In this exhibition, we bring together artworks by British artists including George Morland, William Blake, and William Mulready, and contemporary satirical prints, alongside Constable’s own sketches, studies and finished paintings to show what lies behind the making of this iconic British painting.

Join Associate Curator Mary McMahon and Director of Collections & Research Christine Riding as they bring ‘The Hay Wain’ to life.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of this event.
