About
Curators Maria Alambritis and Matthias Wivel introduce ‘Parmigianino: The Vision of Saint Jerome’.
Celebrate Parmigianino’s 'Madonna and Child with Saints' (‘The Vision of Saint Jerome’, 1526‒7) which returns to public view for the first time in a decade, following meticulous conservation treatment.
Born Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola (1503–1540), Parmigianino - whose nickname means ‘the little one from Parma’ - was one of the most influential and accomplished Italian artists of the 16th century. 'The Vision of Saint Jerome', painted when he was just 23 years old, is his masterpiece from his brief period in Rome.
A prolific draughtsman, Parmigianino dedicated numerous drawings to the development of 'The Vision of Saint Jerome'. An important selection of these are displayed for the first time alongside the painting, showcasing the artist’s creative process, extraordinary mastery across media and development of his unique final composition.
