About

Award-winning author Elizabeth Fremantle sits down with creator Busayo Matuluko to discuss Elizabeth’s book, ‘Disobedient’, as part of our Members’ book club.

‘Disobedient’ is a historical fiction that explores the life of Artemesia Gentileschi. In our collection, you can find Artemesia Gentileschi staring defiantly from her 'Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria'. The wheel denotes her martyrdom, and she holds the martyr’s palm as if a paint brush. She is a survivor of sexual violence just like Saint Catherine. She is also a painter, and this work is her calling card.

In 17th century Rome, her life ‘belongs’ to the men around her, but she has her own story to tell. Elizabeth and Busayo explore Artemesia’s history, her story, and her life’s work as this online book club, with an opportunity to ask your own questions at the end of the conversation.

Pick up your own copy of ‘Disobedient’ in the National Gallery’s Portico Shop. Disobedient is published by Penguin Random House.
