About
Nick Makoha’s most recent poetry collection ‘The New Carthaginians’ takes its name from a pair of paintings by Joseph Mallord William Turner, admired by Nick, depicting the rise and fall of the Carthaginian Empire, one of the most important trading hubs of the Ancient Mediterranean. ‘Dido building Carthage’ and ‘The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire’, now at Tate, would have been understood as a reflection of contemporary European politics.
An admirer of Turner, Nick’s new collection is a work in which the familiar Western canons of art, history and philosophy are prised apart and reassembled in a new configuration. On World Poetry Day, he joins us to discuss the relevance of Turner, both to his own work and more widely, as well as the relationship between poetry and art, with Matthew Morgan, former Museum Director of Turner's House, alongside readings of his poetry.
‘The New Carthaginians’ published by Penguin is released on Thursday, 27 February 2025 and available in our shop on the evening.
