About

Martin Gayford shares insights from his new book, ‘How Painting Happens (and why it matters)', at this online Members’ talk and Q&A.

This richly illustrated book weaves the voices of artists past and present: Lucien Freud, David Hockney, Constable, Titian and Picasso.  Hear the personal reflections of these artists on their chosen medium; how and why they paint; the influence of fellow painters; and how they find creative sustenance in their art.

'How Painting Happens (and why it matters)' crosses the centuries to give us a wealth of insights into the endlessly compelling phenomenon of painters and painting. Martin Gayford highlights some of these concepts at this special Members’ event.

How Painting Happens (and why it matters) can be found in our online shop and in the Gallery.
