About

During this in-focus session, we will examine Georges Seurat’s work in the context of other artists who built what is recognised as the Neo-Impressionist movement. Dr Amy Mechowski will discuss how Seurat was both an artistic visionary and a significant political commentator whose work critiqued significant divides in the social classes of modern Paris.

Through a series of case studies, from ambitious large-scale paintings to the small oil sketches and intimate drawings that helped create them, this session will consider the scope and impact of Seurat's work - as an artist equally capable of capturing shimmering natural wonders in the French landscape and expressing anarchist political sentiments related to urban life.
