About
Famed for his theatrical use of architecture and sumptuous use of colour, Paolo Veronese's paintings epitomise the opulence and magnificence of patrician life in Renaissance Venice. One of the most prolific and popular artists of the 16th century, he was also extremely versatile, devising everything from sophisticated programmes of fresco decoration for private villas to large-scale altarpieces, refined portraits and intimate devotional works.
In this session, we will explore the painter’s early life in Verona and the impact of the city’s Roman heritage on his career, as well as a variety of projects produced after his transfer to Venice in the 1550s. Here, Veronese gained illustrious commissions in equal measure from the state, the church and private patrons, as well as an increasingly international clientele.
