About

What can we see of the intersection of science and art in William Hogarth’s ‘Marriage-a-la-Mode’: 3, The Inspection'?

Art historian Matthew Morgan leads this online discussion to explore Hogarth’s painting and the commentary it evokes.

This is a heart-breaking scene. A man and a young girl are in an apothecary's buying medicine for venereal disease, now known as a sexually transmitted infection. The apothecary’s room is full of extraordinary medical contraptions, but the doctor himself has marks of the disease. Hogarth makes clear that the 'cure' is false. In his opinion, this illness comes from an immoral life.

What else does Hogarth have to say in this work? What does it say of morality, medicine and innovation in our contemporary world?

Matthew delves into the painting before opening a chat-based discussion to hear your thoughts about the intersection of science and art at this online session.
