About

In this course, you will learn how to draw vivid and modern compositions in response to any landscape you encounter with a focus on colour, layering, and line. The multiple exercises and techniques you will learn in the course are drawn on the rich layers of the Mexican landscape, geology and history, captured by the landscapes and drawings in our exhibition, ‘José María Velasco: A View of Mexico’.

We'll start with exercises focused on traditional landscape construction by building up the layers of the background, mid ground and foreground. We'll then narrow our compositions with exercises that look at geology, plants and cropping that are reminiscent of other modern masters from the 19th century like Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cezanne. By the end of the session, you will have learned techniques and tricks that you can easily take out into your local landscape or any environments in the upcoming summer months.

All you will need for the session is three markers or felt-tip pens of different colours and a couple pieces of paper.
