Highlights of the 19th century
About
Some of the most well-known art movements in our popular consciousness emerged during the 19th century – Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism, to name just a few. To what extent are these ‘isms’ helpful? And how can we move beyond them to discover stories about individual paintings and their lifetimes both before they found a home in the National Gallery and since? In these lunchtime talks, join Dr Amy Mechowski, art historian and course leader for 'Stories of Art', as she explores highlights from the 19th century in the collection and their powerful, often surprising, histories.
