About

In this after-hours tour, fashion historian Rosie Harte unpicks moments in history through painted fashion.

Rosie will visit some of her favourite paintings in our collection, such as Paul Delaroche’s ‘The Execution Of Lady Jane Grey’ and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ ‘Madame Moitessier’. She will explore theme of change and transformation in 19th-century fashion and how this relates to current discussions about fast fashion and sustainability.

What can we see of the historic transitions when we look at Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ ‘Monsieur de Norvins’, the stern and reserved painting of the Chief of Police in Rome under Napoleonic rule? Or when we turn toward another Ingres’ painting which showcases the dazzling dress and fine jewellery of ‘Madame Moitessier’, painted 30 years later under the restoration of the French imperial throne?

Rosie will explore these questions and more at this livestream tour from the Gallery.
