About

Director of Collections & Research, Christine Riding is joined by Chief Art Director of Soho House, Kate Bryan, in a morning discussion that takes you behind the scenes of the National Gallery. The pair discuss the recent Sky Arts documentary which gains unprecedented access to the gallery, telling the story of its collection – the most famous works and the most celebrated artists.

Together, Christine and Kate talk through the 200 year history. On the way they discuss the original acquisition of just 38 paintings that made up the National Gallery in 1824, onto Britain’s most important painter, JMW Turner, and his bequest of 1000 paintings, drawings and watercolours to the nation in 1856. Both Christine and Kate will divulge their personal favourite works in the collection, before speculating what the next 200 years at the National Gallery may look like.
