About

This archive show-and-tell session, led by Alan Crookham and Nicholas Smith from our Research Centre, looks at other stories within British art.

Using archives and rare books we will explore the collection of British art during the 19th century, from the first 38 pictures acquired for the nation, to the significant additions of the Vernon Gift and the Turner Bequest. We examine the establishment of the Tate Gallery and tell the story of the relationship between Millbank and Trafalgar Square, when both galleries were one institution. The session concludes with the separation into two galleries in 1955.

The meeting point will be in Annenberg Court and from here, you will be escorted to the Library.
