About
‘C C Land: The Wonder of Art’ marks the end of our 200th birthday year as we reopen the whole of the National Gallery.
We’ve always told the story of painting in the Western European tradition, from the middle of the 13th century to the early 20th century. Alongside the reopening of the Sainsbury Wing, the collection will be completely redisplayed. We’ve never done this before.
The way we have displayed the collection from our oldest to most recent paintings may be familiar. But rather than telling a single story of the history of art, we have introduced new narratives. So, you’ll find unexpected themed rooms that tell us about the making of art, particular types of painting like portraits or flower paintings, or an individual artist. And we have paired works together across centuries.
Every week we'll shine a spotlight on one room in the Gallery. Join curators and educators as they explore paintings displayed in new and unexpected ways.
Spotlight on Room 55

Explore Room 55, which displays works by German Renaissance artists, including Lucas Cranach the Elder with Christine Seidel, Associate Curator (Renaissance Painting).
Spotlight on Room 64

Explore one of our new themed rooms, one that glistens, with Nicholas Flory, the Simon Sainsbury Curatorial Fellow (Paintings before 1600). Every painting hanging here has one thing in common: the colour gold.
Spotlight on Room 41

Explore Room 41, which displays some of the early work of the Impressionists, including work by Edouard Manet, Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot with Sterre Overmars, Harry M Weinrebe Curatorial Fellow.
Spotlight on Room 26

Imogen Tedbury, Curator of Later Italian, Spanish and French Painting introduces Room 26, which displays small intimate works from the Baroque (1600–1700) period including works by Annibale Carracci and Guido Reni.
