About

Ultramarine was once the most expensive pigment. It then became one of the most affordable. How could that be? This is the story of ultramarine, a story of trade, of symbolism and of making art.

Art historians Evie Hatch and Ben Street are both fascinated by colour: the pigments, their meaning and their history in art. In this online Members’ conversation, Evie and Ben discuss one pigment’s vivid story from the iconography of Sassoferrato to the quick brushstrokes of Impressionists like Claude Monet.

Speakers

Evie Hatch is a London-based art historian, and writer whose work explores the histories and personalities of artist pigments from antiquity to the present. Evie studied Fine Art as an undergraduate and later pursued the History of Art as a postgraduate, specialising in the art of the late European Middle Ages. Both of these strands, the practical and the academic, inform her research into the material and cultural narratives embedded in artist colour. Evie is the writer and presenter of Jackson’s Art’s Pigment Stories series on Instagram and TikTok, and is currently working on her first book.

Dr Ben Street is an art historian and educator. He is the author of numerous books for general audiences, including 'How to Enjoy Art' (Yale, 2021) and the award-winning children's book 'How to Be An Art Rebel' (Thames and Hudson, 2021). He is a tutor and lecturer at the University of East Anglia and the University of Oxford. He is a contributing writer on art for Art Review, the Times Literary Supplement, Apollo, and Gagosian Quarterly. He has been an educator and lecturer for the National Gallery, Tate, the Royal Academy of Arts, Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
