The National Gallery had proved its value - and the value of art - in the darkest hours of the early 20th century. Its staff now hosted exhibitions, did scientific research, conserved the paintings, made refreshments, and held events. A guard dog called Rex even joined the team to help care for the collection. As the Gallery celebrated its 150th anniversary, there were decisions to be made about how it was to grow and develop. The Sainsbury Wing opening in 1991 marked a new chapter that was thoroughly modern in tone.
