Anna Jameson’s ‘Memoirs of the Early Italian Painters’, German Art History and the National Gallery by Professor Adele Ernstrom


The inaugural Anna Jameson Lecture was delivered by Adele Ernstrom, Professor Emerita, Department of Fine Arts, Bishop’s University, Canada. Her lecture explored how Anna Jameson’s Memoirs of the Early Painters (1845) and other writings played an important role in educating the public in art at a time crucial for the development of the National Gallery. Influenced particularly by German art historical research, Jameson’s writing clearly, accessibly and elegantly urged readers to support the idea of a gallery for the nation, to see works in the collection and suggested acquisition of works valuable for the historical character of the newly formed Gallery.
