Antoine-Victor-Edmond-Madeleine Joinville, 'A Distant View of Tivoli', 1824
About the work
Overview
This is one of the few oil sketches by Joinville to be signed and dated, possibly suggesting that the painter was thinking of selling it. The view is sketched from the opposite side of the Temple of Vesta, to the right of the Cascatelli Grandi (large waterfalls), looking across towards the Villa Maecenas and the Roman Campagna in the distance.
