Costa probably painted this work while on a sketching expedition with George Heming Mason in 1853, during which they both painted views of the coast at Anzio. In Costa's small painting the sky occupies more than half the picture space. Texture is given to the landscape by the artist's use of thin paint, which allows the grain of the wooden panel to show through.
