Daniel is one of the four so-called 'greater prophets' of the Old Testament. The other three are Ezekiel, Isaiah and Jeremiah. The last two are depicted with him in the tympanum above the central panel in Duccio's triptych of 'The Virgin and Child with Saints' in the Collection .
The Book of Daniel recounts, among other events, the famous story of how he survived imprisonment in a lions' den because of his faith.
