The Holy Women were the women who were present at the Crucifixion. According to Saint Matthew's Gospel (27: 56), they included Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee (the Apostles James and John). Saint Mark's Gospel (15: 40-1) also names Salome. All four Gospels refer to, but do not name, numerous other women who were followers.
On the third day, after the Entombment, Mary Magdalene, accompanied by one or two of the other women, the other Mary, and either Salome or Joanna, went to the tomb, only to find it empty.
