Iconography formerly meant the study of likeness. Thus the iconography of Christ would be the attempted portrayal of his actual appearance. Similarly, the iconography of Sir Isaac Newton, for example, would refer to the paintings and prints depicting the man himself.
It has in this century come to refer to the study of the imagery or content of art. Such an approach can be distinguished from other forms of study, such as the analysis of contrasting styles or techniques.
