According to Christian doctrine Jesus Christ was the Son of God who was sent to earth as a man to save the world, which had fallen from its original state of innocence through sin.
Christians believe him to be the Messiah whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament, and his teachings, actions and miracles are recounted by his apostles in the New Testament. The Gospels describe his Crucifixion by the Romans, his Resurrection and finally his Ascension to heaven where he rejoined his Father.
Christ's life, teachings and Passion form the central tenets of the Christian faith. Many aspects of them have been painted by artists as the subjects of devotional works.
With God the Father and the Holy Spirit, he is a member of the Trinity.
